Russia continues its triumphal march with the victory against Luxembourg. With the draw in Lisbon, where the match Portugal-Israel ended 1:1, Russia is only one step away from the 2014 World Cup in Brazil. Therefore, even a draw in Azerbaijan will be enough for Capello’s team.
Since Ignashevich can’t play, Capello chooses Granat as centre middle back. As for the rest, this could be considered the best formation possible, with Kokorin and Samedov playing as wingers and Kerzhakov as the last player of attack. As it was forecasted, Russia has a vibrant start. The first real opportunity happens at the 7’, when the aforementioned Kerzhakov misses the good chance from a favourable position. 2 minutes later, Sbornaya actually takes the lead: Shirokov awards a beautiful incursion of Kombarov, whose assist crosses the whole area and is eventually collected by Samedov. The midfielder of Lokomotiv is taking an advantage of his technical skills and realizes a beautiful goal. Since this moment, the match is under the control of the “Capello’s 11”, often spreading panic into the opponents’ defence. This gives the expected result at the 39’ when, after a good team move, Fayzulin makes it 2:0 elating an assist made by his captain. It’s clear that the match is over, when Glushakov takes advantage of a mistake of Luxembourg defence and scores the 3rd goal. That’s the way the convincing 1st half ends. After the break, Kokorin goes out, skimped for the match in Baku, substituted by Zhirkov. However, the wing player of Dinamo doesn’t have the chance to shine and is substituted on the 64’ by Bystrov due to a light injury. During the 2nd half the game calms down and the only remarkable event is the goal of Kerzhakov. Alexandr scores with a head after the second assist of Kombarov. For the ex-Sevilla striker it’s the 24th goal with the National team, making it -2 from the top scorer Beschastnykh. Now Sbornaya needs only 1 point in Azerbaijan. To conclude, I recommend HERE the nice interview with Samedov. Vpered!
